Behind The Scenes

Shooting a model with a city in the background isn’t as easy as it would seem. I had for a very long time now wanted to do a shoot at night with a city scape in the background. Something that I found could be very challenging.

Not necessarily challenging in the way one might think, just challenging because I wasn’t sure exactly how to accomplish the look I wanted. I have a friend who has this great loft apartment with roof access and he allowed me to come shoot there and what a great day it was.

How Sales Hurt Your Business.

Do you have any idea how having sales and mini-sessions may be hurting your photography business? I’m seeing a lot of talking about holiday sales and mini-sessions. I find myself often screaming into the void for them to stop doing that! It is one of the types of things that can often diminish the value of the brand they’re trying to build.

Your photography business is not a retail business. You’re providing people with a service. A service that has long been a luxury service; and many of you call yourselves luxury brands and talk about how you’re creating a luxury experience for your clients.

You Must Use Contracts.

Contracts. That seemingly dirty word so many photographers seem to really dislike. It’s almost as if so many of these people don’t understand the purpose of contracts, or how having a written agreement protects them and their business. I mean really! How can you call yourself a professional and not use the tools of a professional.

I have seen some insanely ridiculous statements in a variety of groups lately about contracts and their use. Or their lack thereof. One of the groups in particular were run by a photographer who people consider a photography business mentor. She actually discouraged members in her group to not use contracts.

So Many Look For Shortcuts Rather Than Work!

As a member of several Facebook groups about photography for beginners I often see a lot of questions that really make me shake my head.

I see a lot of people taking photos in natural light and doing it really poorly. To the other extreme I see people who spend lots of money on lighting only to take really poor quality photos.

Know Your Rights!

Sometimes You just have to know your rights as a photographer!

There are times when, as a photographer shooting on location you might come across an over zealous rent-a-cop or a police officer who really has no idea how to handle you and what you’re doing; and they will immediately tell you to cease and that you can not be there or that you can not be taking photos.

This is undoubtedly annoying when you are not breaking any laws to get that wonderful shot.

Glamour v. Boudoir Photography

Is it Glamour Photography or Boudoir Photography?

I was recently in a group for “Boudoir” photographers when someone posted an image that was not a boudoir photo but was in fact a glamour photo. I mentioned that it was a great image but that it really didn’t qualify as a boudoir image as the model was just a girl standing outside against a wall wearing jeans and a bra.

Everything about the image was well shot; the lighting, composition, exposure. But it wasn’t a boudoir image.Shortly after posting my comment the owner of the group who is apparently a very well known boudoir photographer responded to me that I needed to read the rules of the group.
