Glamour v. Boudoir Photography

Is it Glamour Photography or Boudoir Photography?

I was recently in a group for “Boudoir” photographers when someone posted an image that was not a boudoir photo but was in fact a glamour photo. I mentioned that it was a great image but that it really didn’t qualify as a boudoir image as the model was just a girl standing outside against a wall wearing jeans and a bra.

Everything about the image was well shot; the lighting, composition, exposure. But it wasn’t a boudoir image.Shortly after posting my comment the owner of the group who is apparently a very well known boudoir photographer responded to me that I needed to read the rules of the group.

The so-called photographers who poo-poo the rules usually never took the time to learn them and wouldn’t understand them if they had. You can only break the rules if you know what they are. Most of the “rules” came about after years of trial and error and studying what the great master painters did.

The rule of thirds comes from the psychology of how the eyes look at any image or surface; and where things look best positioned. This is science people! Not subjective decisions.

10 Things Photographers Never Said 30 Years Ago

Time flies and things change. The Internet was a baby 25 years ago and the multitude of photo-related forums didn’t exist. So photographers joined camera clubs (the original photo “meet-up” groups) and discussed common interests.

As I recollect those days, it strikes me how much the conversations have changed. While I am sure SOMEONE was mentioning these things SOMEWHERE – I never heard it. But it is interesting to consider

Learn Actual Photography First!

I’ve been seeing a lot of talk once again about retouching images and how only old school photographers say things like “get it right in camera”. Or people talking about how photography is different today than it was 30 years ago.

Today; Photoshop is a part of photography. Or so they try to tell me.
